3/24/2008

Dana Shepherd batted .500 and slugged .833 at the UMBC Spring Classic.

BALTIMORESenior shortstop Dana Shepherd (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills), sophomore first baseman Amanda Fefel (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) and freshman pitcher Stephanie Weigman (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) were all named to the Sixth Annual UMBC Spring Classic All-Tournament Team, UMBC head coach Joe French announced Monday.

Shepherd led the Retrievers offensively on the weekend, batting .500 (9-for-18) with a double, a triple, a home run, four RBI and four runs scored. She also slugged a team-best .833 with 15 total bases. In the first game against St. Francis (Pa.), Shepherd hit the game-winning two-run homer in the top of the seventh to give UMBC a 3-2 victory. The next day against Niagara, she went 3-for-4 with a first-inning double, the 200th hit of her career. Shepherd was the only Retriever to get a hit in all five games on the weekend, and she raised her batting average more than 100 points.

Fefel batted .312 (5-for-16) with three RBI and a run scored, and she reached base at a .389 clip, as she has been on base at least once in each game this season, a streak of 22 straight contests. Fefel also struck out seven batters in 7.2 innings of work in the circle.

Weigman went 2-2 with a 3.05 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 20.2 innings of work, holding opponents to a .220 batting average. She struck out seven batters in two separate games on the weekend, and she pitched a complete game against Mount St. Mary’s in the semifinals.

St. Francis (Pa.) catcher Kara Stroup and Niagara left fielder Jenna Baker were named co-MVPs of the tournament. The Red Flash won the UMBC Spring Classic championship game with a 6-0 victory over UMBC, while the Purple Eagles went 3-0 in pool play and won the consolation game, 5-2, over Mount St. Mary’s.
