Weigman Tabbed America East Softball Rookie of the Week

3/17/2008

Stephanie Weigman led UMBC with a 2.47 ERA and 21 strikeouts last week.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.UMBC freshman pitcher Stephanie Weigman (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) was named America East Softball Rookie of the Week for the week ending March 16, the conference announced Monday. The award is the first of her career and the first for a Retriever rookie this season.

Weigman led the Retrievers in wins, ERA, appearances, innings pitched and strikeouts last week, as she went 2-2 with a 2.47 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 22.2 innings of work and held opponents to a .210 batting average.

She suffered a tough-luck loss in the second game of the Howard doubleheader. Weigman allowed just two base runners on a hit and a walk in the first six innings and retired the first seven batters she faced, but she allowed a two-out, two-run home run in the top of the seventh for a 2-1 loss. However, she struck out a career-high eight batters in the game and pitched her second consecutive complete game.

On the second day of the Maryland Spring Break Classic, Weigman threw 6.1 scoreless innings over two games, picking up the win in relief in both contests. She allowed just two hits and no walks while striking out four in 2.1 innings against St. Peter’s, then pitched the final four innings against Niagara and again gave up just two hits and one walk while striking out four.

The Retrievers went 6-4 on the week, including 5-3 against a tough field at the Maryland Spring Break Classic. UMBC returns to action on Wednesday against Niagara at UMBC Softball Stadium.
