Softball Drops Finale at Maryland Spring Break Classic to Host Terps, 5-2
Krista Kearns went 2-for-3 with a double against Maryland.
Maryland took a 3-0 lead with a run in the first and two more in the second on a one-out double by first baseman Brittany Bessho and a two-out, two-run double by right fielder Jenny Belak.
The Retrievers got on the board in the third on an RBI double by senior designated player Ashley Gray, but the Terps answered with a single run in the bottom of the inning on a two-out RBI triple by shortstop Alex Schultz.
UMBC loaded the bases in the fourth but only got one run on a fielder’s choice by senior shortstop Dana Shepherd.
The score remained 4-2 until the fifth, when Schultz drove in another run with an RBI single that pushed the Terps’ lead to three at 5-2. The Retrievers then threatened in the top of the seventh, getting runners on second and third, but they could not capitalize.
Sophomore Amanda Fefel suffered the loss after allowing three runs on five hits in two innings of work. Freshman Stephanie Weigman relieved her and allowed two runs on five hits in the final four innings. Meredith Nelles picked up the victory for the Terps after giving on two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out seven in 6.1 innings. Kerry Hickey picked up the save after retiring the last two batters of the game.
