Softball Splits Two on First Day of Maryland Spring Break Classic

    Ashley Gray picked up her first victory of the season with a shutout.

    COLLEGE PARK, Md.The UMBC softball team (5-9) split two games on the first day of the Terrapin Spring Break Classic at Robert Taylor Stadium. The Retrievers defeated Lehigh, 3-0, snapping the Mountain Hawks’ seven-game winning streak, then fell to Valparaiso, 8-0, in six innings.

     

    Senior Ashley Gray (1-4) picked up her first victory of the season with the complete game shutout on just five hits and two walks while striking out three.

     

    The Retrievers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on RBI singles by freshman outfielders Lynn Pronobis and Lauren Brummell. Then in the bottom of the sixth, sophomore Amanda Fefel hit a solo homer to left for the 3-0 victory.

     

    UMBC managed just three hits against Valparaiso. The Crusaders scored a single run in the second on a solo homer, then added four in the third on just two hits and three Retriever errors. Valparaiso took a 5-0 lead into the sixth before scoring three more times on three hits and a walk-off RBI fielder’s choice.

     

    Freshman Stephanie Weigman (1-5) suffered the loss after allowing all eight runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out five in 5.1 innings of work.

     

    The Retrievers return to action on Saturday, when they take on St. Peter’s at 11 a.m. and Niagara at 7 p.m. on the second day of the Maryland Spring Break Invitational.
