Gray, Fefel Named America East Pitcher and Player of the Week
Ashley Gray earned her second career Player of the Week.
Amanda Fefel was named Pitcher of the Week for the second time in her career.
Gray went 3-for-6 in a rain-shortened week for the Retrievers, hitting her first home run of the season and driving in three runs. She also scored twice in two games. Gray went 2-for-3 with a solo homer in the first game of the George Washington doubleheader, accounting for the Retievers’ lone run of the contest. Then in game two, her lone hit was a two-run single in UMBC’s four-run fifth inning. The award is the second of Gray’s career, as she earned the honor once last season. It is also the first Player of the Week recognition for the Retrievers this season.
Fefel pitched brilliantly in her lone appearance of the week, picking up UMBC’s first shutout of the season while going the distance in the second game of the George Washington doubleheader. She allowed just six hits and one walk while striking out five to improve to 2-0 on the season. The award is the second of Fefel’s career, as she earned the honor once last season. She is the second Retriever to win Pitcher of the Week this year, joining Gray, who was recognized for her Week 1 performance.
The Retrievers return to action on Wednesday, March 12, when they host local rival Howard in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. at UMBC Softball Stadium.
