RETRIEVERS DROP DOUBLEHEADER TO VIRGINIA
Baltimore, MD - The UMBC softball team lost a pair of non-conference games to the Virginia Cavaliers, 9-0 and 6-1, today at the UMBC Softball Stadium. The Retrievers, whose nine-game winning streak was snapped, are now 35-16 overall and 15-3 in the Northeast Conference, while the Cavaliers improved to 40-17 on the season and 0-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. In the first game, the Cavaliers jumped to an early lead after All-American Kristen Dennis hit a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing leadoff hitter Heather Field to score. With two on, sophomore Hannah Owings followed with a homerun to put Virginia up 4-0. The Cavaliers would add three more in the third behind another three-run blast, this time by Dennis, her eleventh of the year. Virginia added two more runs in the sixth, while UMBC only managed to get three hits in the shutout loss. Dennis, who went 2-for-3 with four RBI's, also struck out nine, while walking one to earn her 21st win of the season. In game two, the Cavaliers came up 1-0 in the first after a two-out single by Dennis allowed Field to score. UMBC battled back in the bottom of the same inning, as Lisa Boone led off with a double and later scored on a double by freshman Alexis Viera. The score stayed at 1-1 until Virginia broke the game open with a four-run fifth inning, capped by a three-run homer from Ruby Rojas. The Cavaliers added another in the seventh to seal the 6-1 victory.
