Gray Named America East Pitcher of the Week 2/18/2008

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—UMBC senior Ashley Gray (Pasadena, Md./Northeast/Delaware State) was named America East Pitcher of the Week for the week ending Feb. 17, the conference announced Monday. The award is the third of Gray’s career. Gray suffered two hard-luck losses in two appearances at the UNC-Greensboro Spartan Classic as her offense struggled to support her. In a 1-0 loss to Cleveland State, Gray went the distance and did not allow an earned run. She gave up three hits and a walk while striking out five. She suffered a similar fate against the host Spartans, allowing three runs (two earned) in the complete game. She struck out three and walked just two. On the weekend, Gray struck out eight batters in 12 innings, walked three and posted a 1.17 ERA while holding batters to a .234 average. Gray and the Retrievers return to action on Thursday when they take on in-state rival Maryland for a doubleheader in College Park beginning at 2 p.m.
