VECCHIO HITS THREE HOME RUNS IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OF ST. FRANCIS (NY)
4/14/2002
Baltimore, MD - The Retrievers extended their winning streak to nine with a sweep of St. Francis (NY) (11-21, 6-12 NEC), 4-2 and 7-4, this afternoon at the UMBC Softball Stadium. Senior shortstop Deanna Vecchio hit two homeruns in the first game, and added another in the nightcap to lead UMBC (35-14, 15-3 NEC). In game one, the Retrievers got on the board first after Vecchio homered to left center to lead off the third inning. Lisa Boone followed with a double to right field, and later scored on an error by Terrier pitcher Alex Richardson. St. Francis would tie the game at two apiece in the top of the fourth, but Vecchio would hit a two-run shot in the same inning to give UMBC a 4-2 advantage. Senior pitcher Angie Amedro held off the Terrier offense for the rest of the game and earned her thirteenth victory of the season. In game two, Vecchio led off in the first inning with another homerun to give the Retrievers an early 1-0 lead. UMBC never trailed in this game, as they scored two more in the third and another three in the fifth. Down 6-2, the Terriers threatened in the sixth, scoring two runs on a throwing error by Retriever catcher Lisa Gallignani. However, the attempt fell short as pitcher Linsi Moy earned her first save of the season in relief of starter Kristin Dulay. UMBC would add another run in the sixth to seal the 7-4 victory.
