UMBC Softball Announces Spring Tournament Pairings

BALTIMORE-UMBC head softball coach Joe French today announced the pairings of the two spring tournaments hosted by the Retrievers.

The Fourth Annual UMBC Dawg Pound Tournament will take place Friday, March 7, 2008, through Sunday, March 9, with UMBC, Brown, Canisius, Central Connecticut and Delaware State competing. However, the Hornets will compete only in pool play and will not be included in championship bracket seeding.

Two weeks later, the Retrievers will host the Sixth Annual UMBC Spring Classic, Thursday, March 20 through Saturday, March 22. UMBC, Mount St. Mary’s, Niagara and St. Francis (Pa.) will compete. Niagara returns to the tournament for the third straight year; the Purple Eagles placed third in the 2007 Spring Classic, while UMBC won the event.

Both tournaments include round robin pool play on the first two days and championship bracket play on the final day of competition. However, the Dawg Pound Tournament will include one pool game Sunday morning before bracket play begins. All games will take place at the UMBC Softball Stadium.
