UMBC SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH ST. FRANCIS (PA); WIN STREAK HALTED AT 16

Baltimore, MD - The Retriever softball team's 16-game winning streak was snapped after UMBC (23-12, 5-1 NEC) split a pair with St. Francis (PA) (15-9, 6-2 NEC) in an NEC doubleheader today at the UMBC Softball Stadium. The Retrievers won the first game, 6-2, but fell to the Red Flash in the second, 2-3.In game one, UMBC jumped out to an early lead after senior Deanna Vecchio led off in the first with a double to right field. Senior centerfielder Lisa Boone followed with a double and freshman Kristie Pickeral singled to send Vecchio home. Later in the inning, Red Flash starter Cindi Ciotti would load the bases before giving up a two-out double to Retriever second baseman Christy Sheppard. Jess Graziano and Sarah Crowell would score on the play to put the Retrievers up 3-0. Senior Angie Amedro was awarded the win, giving up three hits and no earned runs in the complete game effort. In the nightcap, the Retrievers would get a 1-0 lead in the first after Boone scored on a wild pitch by Stacy Scofield. However, the Red Flash would tie the game in the second inning behind a solo homerun from senior Jen Leibowitz. UMBC got another run on the board in the third, but St. Francis would rally in the sixth, scoring two more runs on four hits. The Retrievers continue NEC play tomorrow when they host the Robert Morris Colonials at 1 p.m.
