Boston-The UMBC softball team (26-13, 9-5 America East) dropped its third straight game to America East rival Boston University (27-9, 11-2 America East) by a score of 2-1 Sunday afternoon at the BU Softball Field.

The Retrievers took a quick 1-0 lead with consecutive one-out doubles in the top of the first by center fielder Kali Shirk and first baseman Melanie Denischuk.

But the Terriers tied it up in the bottom of the inning on an RBI groundout by center fielder Chiya Louie after second baseman Brandi Shields led off with a double and left fielder Shayne Lotito singled.

Designated player Meagan Coughlin homered with one out in the second to give Boston U. a 2-1 lead, and that was all the Terriers needed, as starting pitcher Megan Currier scattered four UMBC hits over the final five innings.

Currier (14-2) went the distance and struck out three. UMBC starter Ashley Gray (10-6) suffered another tough-luck loss, allowing eight hits and a walk in six innings while striking out two.

Shields was the only batter for either team with more than one hit, as she went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Four of the Retrievers’ six hits were doubles.

The Retrievers return to action Wednesday, April 25, as they head to Vestal, N.Y., to take on America East rival Binghamton. UMBC took the first two games of the series against the Bearcats earlier in the month.
