Shirk Tabbed America East Softball Player of the Week

4/9/2007

Kali Shirk earned the first America East Player of the Week award of her career on Monday.

Boston-UMBC junior center fielder Kali Shirk (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) was named America East Softball Player of the Week for the week ending March 8, the conference announced Monday. The award is the first of Shirk’s career.

Shirk hit a team-best .643 (9-for-14) in four games last week to lead the Retrievers to a perfect 4-0 record. She belted out three doubles, two homers, five RBI and six runs scored and slugged 1.286 and also had three sacrifice bunts.

Shirk went 3-for-4 with an RBI double and three runs scored in the second game of the Georgetown doubleheader after going 1-for-3 in the first game. She was again 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run in the first game against Albany, then crushed two homers to center field in game two, when she was 2-for-3 with four RBI on the day. Her first home run tied the game at 5-5 after the Great Danes had taken the lead an inning earlier.

Shirk becomes the second Retriever to win player of the week accolades this season, as junior Ashley Gray received the honor on March 26.

The Retrievers (19-8, 4-2 America East) defeated Albany Monday afternoon, 6-2, to complete its first-ever three-game sweep of the two-time defending America East champions. UMBC will host conference rival Binghamton on Wednesday for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
