Fefel, Gray Named Co-MVPs of UMBC Spring Classic

Baltimore-Junior Ashley Gray and freshman Amanda Fefel were named co-MVPs of the Fifth Annual UMBC Spring Classic, leading six Retrievers who were named to the all-tournament team, which was announced Monday.
In the four games on the weekend, Gray hit .583 (7-for-12) with four runs scored, two home runs, two doubles, five RBI and 15 total bases. She held a 1.250 slugging percentage and reached base at a .600 clip. Her seven hits were a team high. Gray was also outstanding on the mound, as she went 1-0 with a 0.78 ERA in nine innings, including one complete game. She allowed just one run on six hits and three walks while striking out eight, and opposing batters hit just .188 against her.
Fefel also excelled both on the mound and at the plate for the Retrievers. She went 1-0 with a 1.40 ERA, allowing just one earned run on four hits and a walk in five innings of work while striking out four and holding opposing batters to a .200 average. She also hit .385 (5-for-13) with two home runs, two runs scored, four RBI and 11 total bases. She held an .846 slugging percentage.
Other Retrievers on the all-tournament team were seniors Melanie Denischuk, Reilly Ward and Krissy Licursi and sophomore Krista Kearns. Denischuk hit .556 (5-for-9) with her first two homers of the season, driving in five and scoring five runs while slugging 1.333 and reaching bases at a .667 clip. Ward also hit her first home run of the year, batting .455 (5-for-11) with six RBI and a .727 slugging percentage. Licursi continued her hot start, hitting .300 (3-for-10) with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.
Other all-tournament honorees were Amanda Macenko, Whitney Willard, Christa Coppus and Amanda Houchin from Cleveland State; Tory Healy and Nicole Sum from Niagara; Megan Spehar and Caitlin Carroll from Sacred Heart; and Jayme Elliott from Holy Cross.
UMBC won the Spring Classic with a perfect 4-0 record on the weekend.
Earlier in the season, three Retrievers earned all-tournament team honors for the UMBC Dawg Pound Tournament March 9-11. Those players honored were Fefel, Gray and junior Dana Shepherd.
Fefel went 1-1 in 12.2 innings of work, but allowed just one earned run for a 0.55 ERA and pitched a complete game shutout against Howard. She struck out 14 batters and also hit a home run at the plate. Gray picked up a victory and allowed one earned run in seven innings for a 1.00 ERA and holding batters to a .120 average. She also hit a homer and drove in three runs. Shepherd led the Retrievers in hitting with a .364 average (4-for-11). She scored four runs and hit a double and a home run for a .727 slugging percentage.
Other UMBC Dawg Pound Tournament honorees were Mary Pavalovich and Kristin Frick from Bucknell; Candice Tatum and Dale McNeal from Howard; and Laura Caldwell, Kelley Slingwine and Nicole Bender from St. Francis (
