Retrievers Sweep Weekly America East Softball Awards

Ashley Gray was named America East Player of the Week after hitting .429 and posting a 1.11 ERA.

Amanda Fefel earned America East Rookie and Pitcher of the Week honors after hitting .333 and posting a 1.24 ERA and perfect 3-0 record.

Boston-UMBC junior Ashley Gray was named America East Player of the Week and freshman Amanda Fefel was garnered both America East Pitcher and Rookie of the Week honors for the week ending March 25, the conference announced Monday.

 

Gray helped lead UMBC to a 7-2 mark with her efforts at the plate and on the mound. She hit .429 (12-for-28) with three homers, two doubles and eight RBI and scored eight runs. Her 12 hits, 23 total bases and .821 slugging percentage led the Retrievers on the week. She posted a 1-1 record and a 1.11 ERA in 19.0 innings of work, allowing just three earned runs and striking out 16. Opposing batters hit just .200 against her and she pitched two complete games while also working in relief three times.

 

Gray started the week with two hits in the second game of the Delaware State doubleheader. In the UMBC Spring Classic, Gray went 3-for-4 with a homer, a double, an RBI and two runs scored against Sacred Heart and 3-for-3 with a double, a homer, a two-run single, four RBI and two runs scored against Holy Cross. On the mound in the second game of the George Mason doubleheader, Gray allowed just one earned run on four hits and four strikeouts in six innings, and she struck out five in seven innings while allowing just one earned run on five hits against Niagara. She also pitched two scoreless innings in relief against Cleveland State.

 

Fefel was a perfect 3-0 on the mound last week and boasted a 1.24 ERA in 17.0 innings of work, allowing just three earned runs and striking out 13. Opposing batters hit just .169 against her, and she pitched a complete game. In the first game of the Delaware State doubleheader, Fefel pitched five innings and allowed one earned run on four hits and struck out three for the win. Against Niagara, she pitched a complete game and allowed just one earned run on three hits and six strikeouts to pick up the victory. And against Cleveland State in the UMBC Spring Classic, Fefel pitched five innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits and four strikeouts for the win.

 

Fefel excelled at the plate as well. She hit .333 (9-for-27) with three homers, a triple and a team-best 10 RBI and scored seven runs. She recorded 20 total bases for a .741 slugging percentage. In the first game of the Delaware State doubleheader, Fefel went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a two-run triple, then in the nightcap she hit a three-run homer. She also homered in the second game against George Mason. Against Niagara, Fefel went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. In the UMBC Spring Classic, she went 2-for-4 with a home run and a two-run single against Sacred Heart, and then went 3-for-3 with a homer against Cleveland State.

 

Gray, Fefel and the Retrievers return to action Tuesday when they head to Washington, D.C. to take on Howard in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
