UMBC GOES 1-2 AT PHOENIX CLASSIC
In the fourth of five scheduled tournaments this season, UMBC (7-11) came away with one win and two heartbreaking losses.On March 8, the Retrievers lost to Harvard, 2-1. UMBC scored the first run of the game after Deanna Vecchio led off with a double and came home on an error by Harvard pitcher Kara Brotemarkle. However, it was the only run the Lady Retrievers would score as Brotemarkle struck out seven and allowed only one hit for the day.On Saturday, March 10, UMBC defeated Cleveland State, 14-6, and again lost by a one-run margin to Appalachian State, 4-3. In the first game, the Retrievers pounded Viking pitcher Lindsay Gervais for twelve hits, including two doubles by Crystal Beveridge, who went 3-for-3 with a walk and two RBI's. In the later game, although UMBC outhit Appalachian State, 8-4, the Retrievers would not be able to pull off the win.
