UMBC CAPTURES FIRST WIN IN 2002, DROPS THREE AT PIRATE CLASSIC

In the second of five tournaments this season, the Retrievers managed to come away with two wins at the Pirate Classic, hosted by East Carolina on February 22-24. UMBC, now 2-7 overall, captured their first win of the season when they defeated Fairfield, 3-2. Senior Linsi Moy was credited with the win, thus improving her record to 1-2. The Retrievers' second win came a day later, when they shutout Delaware, 6-0. As a team, UMBC amassed seven hits, while pitcher Angie Amedro gave up six hits and struck out two in a complete game effort.In the tournament, the Retrievers were shutout by Canisius, 7-0, and defeated twice by host East Carolina. The Pirates were led by Laurie Davidson in the first meeting, as she threw a one-hitter, en route to a 2-0 shutout of UMBC. In the second game, the Retrievers were unable to avenge the earlier loss, and fell by a score of 9-2. The Retrievers travel to Virginia Beach this weekend for the Dixie Classic, where they will face James Madison, Norfolk State, and Cornell.
