Dana Shepherd scored the Retrievers lone run on Sunday.

Burlington, Vt. -   The UMBC softball team (41-13, 9-5 AE) dropped a 7-1 decision to Vermont (13-21, 4-10 AE) on Sunday afternoon in America East Conference softball action at Archie Post Field on the campus of the University of Vermont.  Aimee Kern for the Catamounts stifled the UMBC bats, allowing three hits and striking out 10 for the complete game win.

UMBC’s lone run came in the second inning as Dana Shepherd led off the inning with a single through the right side.  After back-to-back strikeouts by Kern, Shepherd stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, setting up a unearned run as she crossed the plate on a error that allowed Ashley Underwood to reach first base.

Kern would sit down the next nine batters in a row and cruised down the stretch, allowing UMBC four base runners the remaining five innings of the game.  Vermont took a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run home run by Kern.

The Catamounts scored another run in the third, chasing UMBC starter Brittney Boyd from the game.  Boyd took the loss to fall to 8-2 on the year after allowing three runs on seven hits in 3.0 innings pitched.  Amy Sadowl allowed two runs on three hits in 2.0 innings while Lauren Nicholson pitched the final inning.

Kern moved to 11-10 on the season with the win.  She also finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.  Albany’s first three batters went a combined 5-for-11 in the game with four RBI and five runs scored.

UMBC returns to action on Wednesday, April 26 at 2 p.m. at UMBC Softball Stadium against Binghamton.
