DENISCHUK NABS FOURTH STRAIGHT AMERICA EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARD

Melanie Denischuk hit .471 with four home runs last week.

Boston-UMBC junior first baseman Melanie Denischuk (Poway, Calif./Hugh Sutherland (Carstairs, Alberta)/Indian River CC/Auburn) earned her fourth consecutive America East Player of the Week award for the week ending April 16, the conference announced Monday. The honor is her fifth of the season.

 

Denischuk hit .471 (8-for-17) with four home runs and eight RBI in six games last week. She collected 20 total bases for a 1.176 slugging percentage, and she walked five times for a .609 on-base average. She was 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in the series finale against Albany on April 10 and 2-for-2 with two home runs, three walks and three RBI in the first game of a doubleheader against Binghamton on April 12. She hit 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in the nightcap, and she homered with two outs in the bottom of the seventh in the series finale against Boston University.

 

The UMBC single-season home run and RBI record holder, Denischuk leads the NCAA in both categories with 22 homers and 78 runs driven in. She is hitting .473 on the season.

 

The Retrievers return to action Tuesday when they host Coppin State in a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m. at UMBC Softball Stadium.
