DENISCHUK NAMED ECAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Melanie Denischuk broke the school record for home runs and RBI in a single season.

Centreville, Mass.-UMBC junior first baseman Melanie Denischuk (Poway, Calif./Hugh Sutherland (Carstairs, Alberta)/Indian River CC/Auburn) was named Eastern College Athletic Conference Division-I Player of the Week for the week ending April 2, the league announced Tuesday.


Denischuk hit .619 (13-for-21) in seven games on the week, scoring eight runs and driving in 13. She hit one double and three home runs. She was 3-for-3 with three RBI in the first game of the doubleheader against Howard on March 28. She went 3-for-4 with a run and three RBI against Hartford on April 1. She went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and a three-run home run in the second game of the series against the Hawks. She had at least one hit in every game of the week and she drove in at least one run in all but one game.

 

Denischuk earned her second consecutive and third overall America East Player of the Week awards on Monday.

 

On Tuesday, Denischuk hit three home runs and drove in seven runs to break UMBC’s single-season home runs and RBI records with 17 and 65, respectively.

 

Denischuk and the Retrievers return to action this weekend, as they host defending America East champion Albany in a three-game series at UMBC Softball Stadium. The first game of Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m., while Sunday’s game will also start at 12:30 p.m.
