FOUR RETRIEVERS NAMED TO UMBC SPRING CLASS ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM

Baltimore, Md.-For Retrievers were named to the UMBC Spring Classic all-tournament team, which was announced Monday. Junior Krissy Licursi (Sussex, N.J./Vernon Township/Sussex CC), sophomore Dana Shepherd (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) and freshmen Courtney O’Hara (Pasadena, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) and Krista Kearns (Santa Fe Springs, Calif./Santa Fe) all earned nods.

 

Licursi hit .538 (7-for-13) in five games on the weekend with three runs, three RBI, two doubles and her first home run of the season. She also collected 12 total bases for a .923 slugging percentage, and she reached base at a .571 clip.

 

Shepherd hit .625 (10-for-16) with six runs, seven RBI, three doubles and her first homer of the season. She also stole to bases on the weekend and collected 16 total bases for a 1.000 slugging percentage, and she reached base at a .647 clip.

 

O’Hara hit a near-perfect .889 (8-for-9) with six runs and six RBI in five games. Six of her eight hits went for extra bases, including four doubles, a triple and a home run. She collected 17 total bases for a 1.889 slugging percentage, and she walked three times for a .917 on-base average. O’Hara also had a steal on the weekend.

 

Kearns pitched brilliantly on the weekend, picking up two wins and posting a stellar 0.57 ERA in 12.1 innings. She allowed only five hits, two walks and one run while striking out 18. She picked up a five-inning complete game shutout win over Sacred Heart on Friday, allowing just one hit while striking out seven. She faced just two batters over the minimum and retired the final nine batters of the game. Against Brown the next day, Kearns allowed one run on four hits and a walk and struck out seven batters in five innings for the complete game victory. She closed out the 6-4 loss to Brown on Sunday, retiring all seven batters she faced with four strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work.

 

Brown’s Mary Seid and Niagara’s Tory Healy were named Co-MVPs of the UMBC Spring Classic. Other all-tournament team members included Brown’s Kelsey Wilson, Jaimie Wirkowski and Linnea Anderson; Niagara’s Jen Yee, Nicole Sum and Brooke Viola; Sacred Heart’s Ashley McDonough; and St. Francis (N.Y.)’s Tonianne Campuzano.

 

Third-seeded Brown won the Fourth Annual UMBC Spring Classic with a 7-3 victory over top-seeded Niagara in the championship game. The Bears reached the title bout with a 6-4 win over No. 2 UMBC in the semifinals, while the Purple Eagles defeated No. 4 Sacred Heart, 10-2, in the semis. The Pioneers had defeated fifth-seeded St. Francis (N.Y.), 10-1, in the first game of the day.
