RETRIEVER SOFTBALL HOSTS SECOND ANNUAL UMBC DAWG POUND TOURNAMENT THIS WEEKEND

Dana Shepherd and the Retrievers host the UMBC Dawg Pound Tournament this weekend.

Baltimore, Md.-The UMBC softball team returns home this weekend to host the Second Annual UMBC Dawg Pound Tournament March 10-12. Howard, Vermont, Maryland-Eastern Shore and St. Francis (Pa.) will compete, with pool play on Friday and Saturday and championship bracket play on Sunday.

 

On the Retrievers:

The Retrievers are 9-4 on the season and had their eight-game winning streak snapped Wednesday night at Delaware… Junior Melanie Denischuk leads the team with four home runs, 16 RBI and 26 total bases… Junior Reilly Ward has 18 career homers, third all-time at UMBC… Sophomore Kali Shirk is a perfect 15-for-15 on the base paths and is now 32-for-32 in stolen base attempts to start her career, a UMBC record. She is also eighth on the all-time Retriever steals list… Senior Lauren Nicholson is 4-0 on the season to give her 42 career wins and move her out of a three-way tie with Crystal Ray and teammate Amy Sadowl for the all-time lead in UMBC history. Sadowl has two wins on the season and 40 in her career, second all-time… Freshman Krista Kearns recorded her first career no-hitter in just her fifth collegiate appearance, as she blanked Delaware State in the UMBC Kickoff Classic championship game last weekend… Senior Jessica Griffith was named Kickoff Classic MVP after smashing three home runs, including the walk-off in the final game, and driving in 10 runs while scoring five… Senior Ashlea Underwood leads the team in both batting average (.423) and on-base percentage (.605).

 

On the Howard Bison:

The Bison are 3-3 on the season. After sweeping the season-opening doubleheader against Virginia State, Howard was swept in a doubleheader by Hampton and split two games with Norfolk State… Debbie Lee leads the team with a .500 batting average (8-for-16), while Tracy Javier has posted a team-best five RBI… No Bison has hit a home run yet this season… Dale McNeal leads the team with a 1.82 ERA in 24.2 innings of work. She is 2-1 on the season and has struck out a team-best 25 batters on the season.

 

On the Vermont Catamounts:

Vermont went 2-3 at the season-opening Charleston Southern Tournament last weekend… The Catamounts were picked to finish eighth in the America East Preseason Coaches Poll… Junior Kate Haber led the conference with a .391 batting average in 2005… Vermont returns five of its top six hitters from last season’s team that won 18 games… Kate Ramsey has posted a team-best .375 batting average through five games this season. She also leads the Catamounts with two home runs and 12 total bases… Whitney Borisenok ranks first on the squad with four RBI… In the circle, Alison Daggett has a team-best 1.43 ERA and 12 strike outs in 14.2 innings.

 

On the UMES Hawks:

The Hawks are 1-5 on the season after the season-opening Elon Tournament last weekend… Jenille Edwards leads UMES with a .533 batting average (8-for-15) through six games… Edwards and Kendra Saunders have hit the Hawks’ only two home runs and driven in all seven UMES runs on the young season… The Hawks were out-scored 57-8 at the Elon Tournament… Pitcher Christina Mason has posted a team-best 20 strikeouts in 16.0 innings.

 

On the St. Francis Red Flash:

The Red Flash are 3-10 on the season and won all three games at last weekend’s East Carolina Tournament, where they went 3-3. St. Francis has defeated Binghamton twice and Liberty once for their three wins… Last year the Red Flash went 9-39 overall and 5-13 in the Northeast Conference. St. Francis returns 10 players, including seven starters.
