UMBC SOFTBALL FALLS TO LIBERTY, 5-0 AT SEAHAWK CLASSIC

    Wilmington, N.C.-On the second day of the Seahawk Classic, the UMBC softball team (1-2) fell to Liberty, 5-0, before its second game of the afternoon was called in the bottom of the third due to heavy rain.

     

    Liberty’s Terra Lowe pitched a gem, limiting the Retrievers to just one hit, a single by Kali Shirk in the third inning. In addition to pitching a shutout, Lowe helped her own cause with a two-run home run to straightaway center field in the third inning.

     

    Jessica Taylor suffered the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings of work, while Brittany Boyd made her first appearance for the Retrievers, allowing one run and four walks in the final 1.1 innings.

     

    UMBC’s game against Delaware State was postponed in the bottom of the third inning due to heavy rain with the score tied, 1-1. The Retrievers’ run came when Melanie Denischuk drove in Shirk with a two-out single after Shirk singled and stole second base for her 22nd consecutive steal.

     

    The game is schedule to resume at 9 a.m. Sunday, followed by the consolation and championship bracket play. Liberty clinched the top seed in the tournament after going 4-0 in pool play, followed by host UNC-Wilmington at 3-1. With a win, the Retrievers will be either the third or fourth seed.
