SOFTBALL INKS CALIFORNIA STANDOUT IN LATE SIGNING PERIOD

7/26/2005

Head softball coach Joe French announced the signing of California standout Krista Kearns.

-UMBC softball head coach Joe French announced today the signing of pitcher/utility player Krista Kearns (Santa Fe Springs, Calif./Santa Fe) to a National Letter of Intent to play softball at UMBC in the 2006 season.

Kearns can play anywhere on the diamond, including catcher, and can pitch at speeds exceeding 61 mph. During her senior year at Santa Fe High School, she hit .320 with a slugging percentage over .600, and she had a 0.54 ERA. She has played summer ball for the Case Batbusters and the San Diego Breakers.

Kearns will be a big addition to our pitching staff, and also as a position player in either the outfield or the infield,” French said.

Kearns was an All-League softball player in high school, and she finished fifth in the California girls’ state finals in wrestling. She joins Courtney O’Hara (Pasadena, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) and Michelle Olivieri (Brockport, N.Y./The Aquinas Institute), who signed with the Retrievers in the fall. O’Hara is a three-time Baltimore Sun First-Team All-Star, while Olivieri is a two-time All-State honoree.
