UMBC SOFTBALL PLACES THREE ON AMERICA EAST ALL-ROOKIE TEAM, TWO ON ALL-SECOND TEAM

Reilly Ward was named to the America East All-Second Team on Wednesday.

Boston, Mass. – UMBC placed three players on the America East Conference Softball All-Rookie team and two on the All-Second team as announced by conference office on Wednesday.  UMBC’s placed the most number of rookies on the All-Rookie team as Dana Shepherd (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills), Kali Shirk (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and Stevie Shore (New Carlisle, Ohio/Northwestern) all received the accolades.  Shirk joined sophomore teammate Reilly Ward (Olney, Md./Sherwood) on the All-Second team.    

 

Ward tied for UMBC’s second best single season in homeruns with 12 on the year as she batted .288, driving in a team-high 39 runs and scoring 30.  Ward recorded nine multi-RBI games and 13 multi-hit games on the year.  In conference play she batted .293 with three homeruns and 13 RBI.  Ward finishes her sophomore year with 16 career homeruns, third on UMBC’s career homeruns chart. 

 

Shirk led UMBC in batting on the season, hitting .333 for the year with 36 runs scored and went a perfect 17-for-17 on stolen bases.  Shirk held a .389 on base percentage and led the team with Shepherd with 19 multi-hit games.  Shirk tallied a team-high 66 hits on the year, becoming the second Retriever freshman to ever hit 60 or more hits in their rookie season.  Shirk carried a team season-long 16-game hit streak through part of the season. 

 

Shepherd ranked second on the team in RBI with 35 and finished the year with a .318 batting average.  Shepherd became the third Retriever freshman to ever hit 60 or more hits in their rookie season as she finished with 63 on the year.  Shepherd led UMBC in multi-RBI games with 11 and tied Shirk for the team lead in multi-hit games with 19. 

 

Shore emerged as one of the best catchers in the league this year, holding a .979 fielding percentage.  Shore hit five homeruns and recorded five doubles on the year, slugging .349 for the season.  The rookie catcher had a team-high 252 put outs and made a mere six errors on the year.

 

Albany, who won the America East Conference regular season title and No. 1 seed in the tournament, won three major awards as Amber Maisonet was named Rookie of the Year, Amanda Morin was tabbed Pitcher of the Year and Chris Cannatta was named Coach of the Year.  Boston University’s Jamie Haas was named Player of the Year. 

 

All awards were announced as the conference banquet prior to the start of the tournament in Stony Brook, N.Y.  Winners were selected by voting from conference head coaches.
