UMBC SOFTBALL DROPS TWO AT ALBANY

Albany, N.Y. –   UMBC Softball (26-30-1, 7-12 AE) was officially eliminated from the America East Tournament as Albany (31-12, 16-2 AE) strung together a pair of victories on Saturday afternoon to captured the America East Regular season title and earn the No.1 seed in the four-team tournament.  The Great Danes captured game one, 5-3, and took game two, 6-0. 

 

Third baseman Kelly Ogden belted a three-run home run as Albany rallied to down UMBC, 5-3, in the first game.  With Albany trailing 3-2 in the fifth inning, Ogden came to bat and hit her second home run of the game to left field to cap a four-run burst.  She hit a solo shot in the first inning to give the Great Danes a 1-0 lead.  It was her second multi-homer game of the season.

 

The Retrievers scored two in the third on a two-run double by shortstop Dana Shepherd and one in the fourth on a homer by designated player Stevie Shore. 

 

Junior pitcher Amanda Morin, struck out 10 batters for the fourth time this season to improve to 14-2.  She allowed four hits in tossing her 13th complete game of the year.  For UMBC, Katie Jo Passero took the loss and falls to 2-2 on the season.  Passero went 5.0 innings allowing five runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. 

 

In the second game, first baseman Ashley Rios hit a two-run homerun to left field to give the Great Danes a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.  The Great Danes added four runs in the fourth inning on RBI by four consecutive batters.

 

Sophomore hurler Casey Halloran pitched her second shutout of the season as she struck out a season-high nine batters.  She is now 15-5 and has won 15 of her last 16 decisions.  Amy Sadowl drops to 10-7 in taking the loss for UMBC.  Sadowl went 4.0 innings allowing six runs, four earned, on six hits with five strikeouts. 

 

Albany, who has now won back-to-back America East Conference regular-season championships, hosts UMBC on Sunday at 12 p.m. to complete the three-game weekend.
