UMBC SOFTBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH DREXEL ON WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON
Amanda McGhee's single in the ninth lifted UMBC to a 4-3 (9) win in game one.
Drexel came from behind twice in game one, tying the game in the bottom of the first and taking a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Retrievers tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth, getting a run on a Dana Shephard RBI single to left.
The game entered the eighth inning using the international tiebreaker which put a runner on second to start the inning, but both teams failed to score in the eighth. UMBC scored its runner from second in the ninth inning on a base hit by McGhee to take a 4-3 lead.
Drexel failed to answer in the bottom of the frame falling 4-3. Krista Van Wert worked nine innings giving up 10 hits and four runs on six walks and three strikeouts to take just her fifth loss of the season. Passero became the pitcher of record when UMBC tied the game and she finished strong for the win, allowing one hit in four and one-third innings and striking out two.
In game two, Jonnae McClain hit a walk-off bases-loaded single to lift the Dragons to a 3-2 victory.
Elizabeth Fuller allowed two runs on one hit and struck out four batters in her sixth win of the season. Amanda Hastings scored a pair of runs in the game to complement her two-RBI performance in game one.
The Retrievers scored two unearned runs in the first inning as two errors allowed Dana Shepherd and Reilly Ward to score.
Amy Sadowl took the loss for UMBC, letting up three runs in six innings of work while walking two and striking out four batters.
