DANA SHEPHERD NAMED CO-ROOKIE OF THE WEEK BY AMERICA EAST CONFERENCE

5/2/2005

Dana Shepherd was named Co-Rookie of the Week by the America East Conference.

Boston, Mass. – UMBC Softball freshman Dana Shepherd (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) has been named America East Conference Co-Rookie of the Week for the week ending May 1, 2005.  Shepherd shares the award with Boston University’s Jenna Grapensteter (Bothell, Wash./Bothell).

In six games last week, Shepherd drove in six runs, scored six times and held a .476 batting average with 10 hits in 21 at bats.  Shepherd held a slugging percentage of .714 and a .500 on base percentage, with two doubles and a homerun.  Shepherd’s homerun was her fifth of the year.

Shepherd’s 10 hits put her at 58 on the year, becoming the fourth Retriever freshman to record at least 50 hits in their rookie season.  Classmate Kali Shirk last week at Stony Brook became the third Retriever freshman to ever reach 50 hits in a season.

Other weekly conference accolades went to Stony Brook’s Hayley Durham (San Jose, Calif./San Lorenzo Valley), who earned her second-straight Player of the Week award and shares it with Samantha Morrison (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) of Hartford. Ashlee Freeman (Northrdige, Calif./Oaks Christian) of Boston University earned her second-consecutive Pitcher of the Week award of the season.

UMBC returns to action with a doubleheader on Wednesday, May 4 at Drexel at 3 p.m.
