SOFTBALL’S RALLY NOT ENOUGH AS MAINE TAKES RUBBER GAME, 7-6 IN NINE INNINGS

5/1/2005

Baltimore, Md.UMBC (25-27-1, 7-10 America East) scored three in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings, but the run scored by Jess Brady in the top of the ninth proved to be the game winner as Maine (15-23, 9-7 America East) defeated the Retrievers, 7-6, this Senior Say afternoon at the UMBC Softball Stadium. Prior to the game, UMBC honored its three seniors, Amanda Bile, Megan Oursler, and Kristie Pickeral.

The Black Bears took an early 1-0 lead when Brady hit a solo homerun in the first inning. However, UMBC would counter in the bottom frame, as sophomore Reilly Ward hit the first of her two homeruns on the day, to give the Retrievers a 1-0 advantage.

Maine reclaimed the lead in the fourth, scoring two on a two-run blast by Dana Grimm. They extended their lead to 6-2 in the fifth, on a two-run double by Erin Provost and a run-scoring single by pitcher Sarah Bennis.

UMBC pulled to within three in the sixth after Ward’s second homerun of the day, and rallied in the seventh as they scored three runs on three hits to tie the game at 6-6. Freshman Dana Shepherd, Pickeral, and junior Ashlea Underwood each batted in a run in that inning.

The game remained knotted at six until the ninth, when Brady led off with a single, and went on to score the winning run.

For the game, UMBC was led by Ward, who went 2-for-2 with two homeruns and three bases on balls, two of which were intentional. Junior Amy Sadowl, who pitched the first six innings, did not get a decision, as she allowed six runs, only three if which were earned, on eleven hits. Sophomore Jessica Taylor was tabbed with the loss, as she threw the final three innings, giving up one run on two hits. Bennis received the win for Maine, as she threw a complete game, giving up six runs on six hits, while walking five, and striking out 11.
