UMBC AND MAINE SOFTBALL SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER

Baltimore, Md. – UMBC (25-26-1, 7-9 AE) split the opening two games of a three-game America East Conference series with Maine (14-23, 8-7 AE) on Friday afternoon at the UMBC Softball Stadium. UMBC won game one 6-3 while the Black Bears came back to take the night cap, 6-2. In game one Amy Sadowl settled in after allowing two runs in the first inning, striking out five in the game and allowing three runs on 10 hits in 7.0 innings. Sadowl (10-5) picked up her 10th win of the season and 38th for her career, tying teammate Lauren Nicholson and former Retriever Crystal Ray with the most career wins by a UMBC pitcher in Retriever softball history. UMBC, who trailed 3-1 going into the bottom of the third inning took over the lead with four runs on four hits as Jessica Griffith led off the inning with a walk. Kali Shirk and Amanda McGhee recorded singles loading the bases for Dana Shepherd with no outs. Shepherd singled in Candace Jaegge fell to 2-6 on the year with the loss, going 6.0 innings allowing six runs on seven hits. Brittany Cheney went 2-for-3 in the game with a solo homerun in the third inning. Amy Kuhl went 2-for-3 doubling in two batters in the first. Shepherd went 3-for-3 in the game to lead UMBC, scoring two runs and driving in three. In game two Reilly Ward with two runners aboard almost hit her 11th homerun of the season as she doubled off the left centerfield wall, bringing in Kali Shirk and Dana Shepherd. Bennis moved to 7-7 on the year with the win while Jessica Taylor took the loss to fall to 5-6. UMBC hosts Senior Day in the series finale on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
