4/26/2005

Dana Shepherd hit a two-run homerun on Tuesday.

VESTAL, N.Y.— Binghamton and UMBC split a doubleheader on Tuesday at East Gym Field as the Bearcats (10-21, 3-10 AE) won the first game 4-0 while the Retrievers (24-25-1, 6-8 AE) held off a late rally in the nightcap to win 4-3.  Game One of the doubleheader counted as an America East Conference game while game two was a non-conference affair.  The games were originally scheduled for Wednesday but forecasted weather conditions moved the games to a Tuesday doubleheader.

Senior pitcher Katie Hansen for Binghamton recorded a two-hit shutout and freshman third baseman Meghan Quinn hit a three-run home run highlighting the opening game.

Quinn's three-run shot came with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning and broke a scoreless tie. It was her first collegiate home run. Hansen struck out six batters and issued just two walks to record her second shutout of the season. Her record now stands at 5-6. Junior pitcher Amy Sandowl (9-5) took the loss going 6.0 innings allowing four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.

In the nightcap, junior second baseman Ashlea Underwood hit a two-run single in the third inning to give UMBC a 2-0 advantage. Freshman shortstop Dana Shepherd made it 4-0 with a two-run homer in the fifth inning. It was her fifth home run of the season.

Binghamton rallied with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Senior outfielder Marisa DeStasio  had a RBI single, senior outfielder Jessica Dima scored on a fielding error and junior second baseman.  Nicole Vitello drove home the final run on a sacrifice fly.  Binghamton, however, went down in order in the bottom of the seventh inning to end the game.

The win went to sophomore Jessica Taylor (5-5) while
junior Lauren Reis took the loss, dropping her record to 0-2.

UMBC returns to action on Friday with conference foe Maine at 2 p.m.

PLEASE NOTE: Because Binghamton and UMBC played two games earlier in the season, the America East Conference rules dictate that only the first game of the doubleheader count in the conference standings. According to the rules, only the first three games played against each team count in the conference standings.
