UMBC SOFTBALL’S KALI SHIRK TABBED CONFERENCE ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

4/18/2005

Kali Shirk was named America East Conference Rookie of the Week.

Boston, Mass. - UMBC softball’s Kali Shirk (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) was named the America East Rookie of the Week on Monday by the league office for the week ending April 17, 2005. The right-handed leadoff hitter batted a blistering .444, was perfect on the base paths stealing 3-or-3 attempts and scored five runs in as many games for the week in which she was honored.

Shirk went 2-for-2 and scored one run in a winning effort in game one of a doubleheader against the Binghamton Bearcats on Wednesday. The centerfielder doubled to lead off the game and came around to score the first run in the first inning on a wild pitch.  In the nightcap of the doubleheader, Shirk scored another run but and totaled two steals on the day.

Shirk came up big once again for UMBC on Sunday as she went 4-for-8 and scored three runs in a doubleheader against Hartford. The first game saw Shirk score twice to help UMBC defeat the Hawks by a final of 7-6. Her two hits in Sunday’s second game gave Shirk a team-high eight for the week.

Shirk is currently tied with teammate Kristie Pickeral (Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone) for most hits in the America East with 47. Shirk’s 27 runs scored is only one behind the league leader and she has stolen an America East second best 17 bases on the season.

Shirk and the Retrievers return to action on Thursday against Delaware at 2:30 p.m. at the UMBC Softball Stadium.
