SOFTBALL GETS TOP SEED FOR EASTER INVITATIONAL WITH WINS OVER SACRED HEART AND NIAGARA

Baltimore, Md.UMBC (13-14-1) claimed the top seed in the Gold Division of the Dawg Pound Easter Invitational, as they went 2-0 this afternoon at the UMBC Softball Stadium. In the first game, the Retrievers shut out Sacred Heart, 3-0, then followed it up with a 5-3 win over Niagara. The pairings for Saturday’s games will be determined after the Canisius-Liberty game, set to begin at 9 a.m. tomorrow.

 

Against Sacred Heart, the game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth, when sophomore Reilly Ward (Olney, Md./Sherwood) singled in freshman Dana Shepherd (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) and senior Kristie Pickeral (Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone) to give UMBC a 2-0 lead. The Retrievers added another run in the sixth on a homerun by senior Amanda Bile (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill). Sophomore Jessica Taylor (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales) received the win as she tossed a complete game, allowing no runs on four hits, walking one and striking out two.

 

Against Niagara, UMBC took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when pitcher Amy Sadowl (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro Horsham) hit a single to score Ward. The Retrievers extended the lead to 4-0 on RBI’s by junior Jessica Griffith (Linthicum, Md./Glen Burnie/Arundel CC) in the fourth and sixth innings, and on a solo homerun by Pickeral in the fifth. The Purple Eagles threatened in the bottom frame, scoring three runs on four hits. However, UMBC added an insurance run in the seventh, and junior Lauren Nicholson (Audubon, N.J./Paul VI) came in to pitch to the final three batters to earn her first save of the season. Sadowl received the win, as she allowed three runs on seven hits, walking none while striking out one.
