SOFTBALL FALLS TO LA SALLE, 7-4, AND SETTLES FOR 4-4 TIE IN NIGHTCAP
3/15/2005
In game one, the Explorers struck first as Megan Berry and Kathy Hennessey had back-to-back RBI doubles in the top of the second inning to give LaSalle a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Amanda McGhee tied the game in the bottom of the fifth when she hit a two-run homerun for UMBC. However, the Explorers blew the game open in the top of the seventh as they scored five runs, keyed by a grand slam from Vinnie Caputo. In the nightcap, UMBC got started early as leadoff hitter Kali Shirk singled, and McGhee walked to start the first inning. With one out, senior Kristie Pickeral was intentionally walked to load the bases, and sophomore Reilly Ward brought everyone home with a grand slam. However, the Explorers soon tied it, scoring three runs in the second and another in the third, to even the score at 4-4. Neither team would score for the rest of the seven-inning game, and the match was called off due to darkness on the field.
For that game, Ward led UMBC with a 2-for-3 performance, scoring a run and posting four RBI’s. Junior Amy Sadowl received a no-decision after throwing seven innings, while giving up four runs on 11 hits.
