DELAWARE STATE SNEAKS PAST UMBC, 4-3, TO CLAIM SOFTBALL SPRING CLASSIC TITLE

    Baltimore, Md. – Senior pitcher Jessica Murray’s leadoff double in the top of the eight inning proved to be the game winner, as Delaware State (3-1) defeated host UMBC (8-9) by a score of 4-3 in eight innings to claim the Third Annual Spring Classic title this afternoon at the UMBC Softball Stadium. The All-Tournament team will be announced on Monday, March 14.

     

    The Retrievers were down 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh when freshman Dana Shepherd (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) tied the game with a walk-off homerun, her first of the season.

     

    The Hornets opened up the scoring in the second inning as Sam Snow and Nicole Demers each hit solo homeruns to put Delaware State up, 2-0. The Retrievers came right back in the third on RBI singles by Shepherd and freshman Stevie Shore (New Carlisle, Ohio/Northwestern), before Murray blasted a homerun in the sixth to put the Hornets up 3-2.

     

    Murray was credited with the victory as she threw a complete game, giving up three runs on nine hits, while walking four and striking out seven. Junior Lauren Nicholson (Audubon, N.J./Paul VI) (5-5) was tabbed with the loss for UMBC, as she also threw a complete game, giving up four runs, three earned, on eight hits, while walking one and fanning four.

     

    UMBC returns to action on Tuesday, March 15, when they host LaSalle for a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
