2/27/2005
The UMBC softball team defeated Charleston Southern and Hampton by scores of 5-1, and 7-5, respectively, to go 2-4 at the UNC-Wilmington Seahawk Classic, and win the Gold Bracket at the three-day tournament. With the wins, the Retrievers improved to 3-8 on the season.
Against Charleston Southern, UMBC scored four runs in the second inning as Amanda McGhee went 3-for-4 in the game with one run scored and an RBI. Jessica Griffith also had a big day, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Junior Lauren Nicholson won her second game of the season as she allowed just one run on seven hits, while striking out three.
In the second game, the Retrievers scored all that they would need in the first inning, as UMBC plated six runs. They were led by Stevie Shore, who went 2-for-3, with a solo homerun, and a two-run double. Nicholson also earned the win in this game, while classmate Amy Sadowl was credited with the save.
