SOFTBALL DROPS TWO AT ELON INVITATIONAL
2/18/2005
The UMBC softball team dropped their first two games of the season, losing in a 5-4 heartbreaker in eight innings to Campbell, before being shut out by Winthrop, 4-0, at the Elon Invitational.
Against Campbell, the Retrievers were down 4-1 before tying the game in the seventh on a double by senior Kristie Pickeral. UMBC had a chance to win in the eight, but could not convert, and would fall to the Camels. Lauren Nicholson was tabbed with the loss for UMBC, despite giving up just three hits, striking out seven, and walking four. Four of Campbell's five runs were unearned.
Against Winthrop, UMBC threatened offensively in the fourth, but was unable to score as they stranded 14 runners for the game. Junior Amy Sadowl pitched in a losing effort, allowing two unearned runs, and two earned runs. She walked one and struck out two.
For the day, the Retrievers were led by Pickeral, who went 5-for-8, Dana Shephard, who was 3-for-7, and Amanda Bile and Ashlea Underwood, who were both 2-for-5.
