UMBC SOFTBALL SIGNS CALIFORNIA STANDOUT JUNIOR COLLEGE SHORTSTOP

8/20/2004

Infielder Ashlea Underwood (Visalia, Calif./Reedly JC) will play softball at UMBC this fall, it was announced by Retriever Head Coach Joe French. Underwood, who is primarily a shortstop, is also capable of playing at third base, second base, or in the outfield.

At Reedly, Underwood was Second Team All-Conference selection as a freshman, and was a member of this previous year's First Team squad. In addition, she was a member of the All-Northern California First Team, as well as Second Team All State squad, as selected by JuCAL Transfer.

French is very excited with Ashlea's abilities. "She gives us another outstanding glove and arm in the infield," said the head coach. "This is our first California student athlete since I arrived four years ago. We look forward to Ashlea having an outstanding career at UMBC."

Underwood becomes the third junior college All-Region player to join the Retriever roster this year. Earlier in the off-season, UMBC signed Amanda McGhee and Jess Griffith, who will join fellow newcomers Stevie Shore, Kali Shirk, Dana Shepherd, Katie Jo Passero and Carla O'Rourke for the 2005 season.
