VERMONT SWEEPS UMBC SOFTBALL

BURLINGTON, Vt. - The University of Vermont softball team won its third straight game in its final at-bat to earn a series sweep over visiting UMBC. Freshman Kate DeForge hit a fly ball over the pulled in UMBC outfield to score the game-winning run and give the Catamounts at 2-1 victory over the Retrievers.
Vermont swept the season series and finishes the 2004 season with a record of 9-34-2 overall and 6-13-1 in America East. UMBC closed out the year with a record of 27-34 overall and 3-17 in the league.
Vermont took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Kara Massey helped her own cause with an RBI single to score Heidi Gebo.
UMBC tied up the game in the third inning. Amanda Bile led off the inning with a double, but was out at third on a fielder's choice by Sarah Crowell. Crowell would score the tying run on Kelly Claar's triple to knot the game up 1-1.
In the bottom of the seventh, junior Angy Montgomery led off the inning with a single. Gillian Rappaport followed with a slap single to give Vermont runners at first and second. Kate Haber put down a sacrifice bunt to move Vermont runners to second and third. UMBC intentionally walked Gebo to load the bases. With just one out, DeForge stepped to the plate. The UMBC outfield moved in and DeForge nailed a fly ball over the center fielder's head to score the game-winning run.
Claar led the Retrievers at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort, while Jessica Taylor tossed a complete game and picked up five strikeouts.
