UMBC SOFTBALL FALLS AT VERMONT, 4-3 AND 3-2
5/8/2004
BURLINGTON, Vt. - Freshman designated player Kate Ramsey knocked the game-winning hit in both games of Vermont's America East doubleheader versus UMBC. The Catamounts swept the Retrievers with two come-from-behind efforts, 4-3 and 3-2, to improve to 8-34-2 overall and 5-13-1 in America East. UMBC dropped to 27-33 overall and 3-16 in the league.
UMBC held a 3-2 lead heading into the seventh inning of game one, but Vermont scored twice in its last at-bat to earn the victory. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, freshman Kate Haber singled, senior Heidi Gebo reached on a bunt single and moved Haber to second. Kate DeForge flied out to right field for the second out of the inning. Ramsey stepped to the plate and knocked her team leading ninth double of the year to drive in Haber and Gebo and give UVM the win, 4-3. Amanda Bile led the Retrievers with three hits and scored two runs.
In game two, Ramsey led the offense and freshman pitcher Meghan Doonan led the defense. In the top of the sixth, UMBC loaded the bases with the scored knotted at 2-2. With one out, Doonan came in for relief of Sara Burke and retired the next two UMBC batters to get Vermont out of the jam.
In the top of the seventh inning, Doonan struck out the first two batters. However, Kristie Pickeral singled and Kelly Claar drew a walk to put runners on first and second with two outs. Doonan was able to get Crystal Beveridge to ground out to shortstop to squash the UMBC threat.
Ramsey came through again in Vermont's final at-bat. With one out Gebo and DeForge hit back-to-back singles to give the Catamounts runners on first and second. Ramsey singled to right centerfield to score Gebo for the game-winning run.
Sarah Crowell and Pickeral registered two hits each to lead UMBC, while Lauren Nicholson tossed a complete game on the mound for the Retrievers.
The Catamounts and Retrievers close out the three-game series and the 2004 season with a single game at 12:00pm on Sunday at Archie Post Field.
