RETRIEVER SOFTBALL PITCHES BACK-TO-BACK SHUTOUTS FOR DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OVER DREXEL

Reilly Ward hit two homeruns on the day to pace the Retrievers.

The UMBC Softball team (27-31) swept Drexel (15-32-2) with a pair of 2-0 shutout victories on Thursday afternoon at the UMBC Softball Stadium.  Reilly Ward hit a two-run homerun in game one and hit a single shot in game two to pace the Retrievers.

 

Amy Sadowl threw a five-hit shutout in game one going the distance for the sixth time this season as she moves 10-10 on the year.  The Retrievers only offense came in the third inning as Kristie Pickeral singled to centerfield with two outs and Ward knocked a shot over the centerfield wall for the two RBI homerun. 

 

Sadowl’s counterpart, Amanda Heyser, went the distance as well allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out six in the losing effort for Drexel.  She moves to 3-3 on the season.

 

In game two the Retrievers followed the lead of starter Lauren Nicholson, who had a one-hitter going through five innings and finished with a complete game three-hit shutout.  Nicholson struck out six batters en route to her 11th win of the season.  She is now 11-10 on the year.

 

Elizabeth Fuller threw a complete game allowing two runs on six hits and striking out four to take the loss and move to 11-11 on the year for Drexel.

 

UMBC tallied their first run in the third with Pickeral lacing an RBI single up the middle to plate Amanda Bile, who led off the inning with a single.

 

Ward knocked her second homerun of the day and fourth on the season with a solo shot over the left field wall in the bottom of the sixth to add an insurance run for the Retrievers.

 

UMBC returns to action this weekend when they travel to Vermont for a three-game series with the Catamounts.
