ALBANY TAKES TWO FROM RETRIEVERS’ SOFTBALL IN DOUBLEHEADER ON MONDAY

Baltimore, Md. – The Albany Great Danes (16-12, 2-0 AE) defeated UMBC (17-18, 0-2) in two games in America East Conference softball action on Monday afternoon at UMBC Softball Stadium. The Retrievers fell in game one by a final of 7-1 and lost in game two by a final of 9-3 as the Great Danes swept the doubleheader.
In game one the Retrievers scored their lone run in the first inning as Amanda Bile walked to start the inning and worked her way around to third base. Kristie Pickeral singled driving in Bile.
The Retrievers stayed within striking distance of the Great Danes up until the fourth inning as Albany held a 2-1 lead before tallying five runs in a span of two innings, scoring three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth.
In the fourth Albany’s Ashley Rios hit a homerun to lead off the inning in which the Great Danes tallied five hits for three markers. In the fifth Rios homered again, this time knocking a two-run shot to complete all the scoring.
Andrea Lindgren went all seven for the Great Danes allowing six hits, one run and striking out 12 Retriever batters. Lauren Nicholson started for the Retrievers as she picked up the loss. She went 4.0 innings allowing seven runs on 11 hits. Amy Sadowl entered the game in relief in the fifth inning pitching the final 3.0 innings allowing two hits and striking out one.
In game two Albany opened the first inning with three runs on three hits as game-one winner Andrea Lindgren hit a two-run homerun off Retriever starter Kelly Claar. The Great Danes added one in the third, three in the fifth and one in the each of the final two innings as Lindgren went 4-for-4 with five RBI and three runs scored, hitting two homeruns in the game for Albany.
The Retrievers scoring came in the second and the seventh inning. In the second, pitcher Kelly Claar helped her own cause knocking a solo shot to open the inning. In the seventh Kristie Pickeral went yard with a two-run homerun after teammate Sarah Crowell doubled.
Casey Halloran went 7.0 innings in game two for the Great Danes while Amy Sadowl again pitched in relief for UMBC, finishing the final 2.1 innings allowing two runs on four hits after Claar went the first 4.2 innings, allowing seven runs on 10 hits.
The Retrievers host Morgan State in their next outing on Tuesday, April 6 at 3:00 p.m. at UMBC Softball Stadium.
