UMBC SOFTBALL SWEEPS LASALLE
Kelly Claar had a grand slam in Game 2 - UMBC's second in three days.
UMBC improved to 15-17 on the season as they swept LaSalle by scores of 6-4 and 7-0 this afternoon at Philadelphia, PA. With the wins, the Retrievers extended their win streak to four, and have now won seven of their last eight games.
The Retrievers struck first in game one with two runs in the first inning. Crystal Beveridge hit a two-out two-RBI double, scoring Amanda Bile and Kristie Pickeral.
The Explorers answered in the bottom of the inning. Vinnie Caputo led off with a double and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Laura DeZolt. She scored on a two-out single by Jeanette Middlestead to cut the deficit to 2-1.
UMBC increased its lead to 5-1 in the third inning and added another run in the fourth to take a five-run lead.
La Salle hit three staight singles to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning, one an RBI-single by Caputo. Alexis Schneider's two-run double two batters later cut the decifit to 6-4, but Lauren Nicholson came in to relieve Amy Sadowl and retired two of the next three batters to pick up her second save of the year. Sadowl improved to 4-6 with the win, while the Explorers' Amy Gooding fell to 0-2.
In a constant rainy mist, neither team could mount any offense in the second game. It was UMBC who finally broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third on a two-run home run by Pickeral.
UMBC added five runs in the top of the seventh to secure the victory, the key blow a grand slam home run by Kelly Claar. It was UMBC's second grand slam in just three days.
Nicholson picked up the win in game two, improving her record to 6-4, while Ali Wood suffered the loss and is now 3-7.
