Fairfax, Va.- Niagara avenged an earlier loss to UMBC (8-16) by defeating the Retrievers by a score of 7-2 this morning at the George Mason Softball Tournament. UMBC finished at 2-3 on the weekend.

Starting pitcher Kelly Claar allowed four runs in the first two innings, but UMBC cut the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the second after freshman Reilly Ward led off with a walk, and scored on a single by Claar. The Retrievers added another run in the fourth when Claar doubled and was batted in by classmate Heather Bennett. However, the Niagara pitching staff would hold UMBC to only two more hits in the final three innings to secure the win for the Purple Eagles.

UMBC returns to action on Wednesday, March 24, when they host Maryland-Eastern Shore for a double-header beginning at 1 p.m.
