FORDHAM HITS FOUR HOMERUNS TO TAKE SPRING CLASSIC TITLE FROM HOST UMBC, 8-3

3/14/2004

  • Box Score

Baltimore, Md.Sophomore Katie Davis went 3-for-3 with three RBI’s and a homerun to lead second-seeded Fordham (10-7) to an 8-3 victory over fourth-seeded UMBC (6-13) in the championship game of the 2004 UMBC Softball Spring Classic. Davis’s efforts earned her Tournament MVP honors, as she batted .562 during the three-day span, with nine hits, two homeruns, seven RBI’s, and three stolen bases.

In the championship game, UMBC starting pitcher Kelly Claar allowed four runs in the first two innings. The Rams would tack another in the fifth before the Retrievers could answer with a run of their own in the sixth. Fordham added three more runs in the bottom of the same inning, with two coming from solo shots by Davis and senior Samantha Crocker. UMBC’s Kristie Pickeral and Reilly Ward would generate solo homeruns of their own in the seventh, but the Retrievers’ effort came too late as Fordham held on to the 8-3 victory.

For the tournament, Fordham’s Jamie Dautel earned Best Offensive Player honors as she batted .583 with two homeruns, four RBI’s, and two stolen bases, while teammate Sara Kinney received the Pitcher of the Tournament award, as she posted a 3-0 record, with one save, three shutouts, 15 strikeouts, and a 0.35 ERA in 20 innings of work. Binghamton shortstop Rose Barre prevented the Fordham sweep by claiming Best Defensive Player honors, as she led the Bearcats to a 5-1 record and third-place finish over the three-day tournament.
