ST. FRANCIS (PA) COMES FROM BEHIND TO DEFEAT UMBC SOFTBALL, 6-5; RETRIEVERS DROP SECOND GAME TO FORDHAM, 8-0

3/13/2004

  • Box Score

Baltimore, Md. – Binghamton (6-2) shut out Maryland-Eastern Shore (1-6) in the first game, 17-0, and defeated St. Francis (PA) (2-2), 12-4, in the next to take the top seed in the 2004 UMBC Softball Spring Classic. Fordham (7-7) won over host UMBC (8-0) by a score of 8-0 in six innings to take the #2 spot. St. Francis (PA), who is 2-2 in the tournament will be the #3 seed, while UMBC will be the #4 seed. UMES has withdrawn from the competition due to injuries suffered during Friday’s games.

In UMBC’s first game, the Red Flash got on the board first after senior Sarah Rebar plated Cassie Scofield with a single. The Retrievers would answer in the bottom of the same inning as leadoff hitter Amanda Bile reached on an error and scored on a single by freshman Reilly Ward. With two runners on, senior Crystal Beveridge then hit her first homerun of the season to put UMBC up, 4-1. The Retrievers added another run in the second to make the score 5-1. However starting pitcher Kelly Claar (3-4) allowed a two-run homerun to junior Siobhan Gerber in the fifth, and gave up three runs on one hit and one error in the bottom of the seventh to take the loss.

In the following game, Fordham batters erupted for five runs on five hits and two errors in the first two innings. UMBC would not be able to answer as Rams’ starter Sara Kinney (4-4) allowed just two hits while striking out seven in five innings of work. Fordham added another run in the fifth before ending the game in the sixth, courtesy of a two-run homerun by senior Erin Brooks. Retriever pitcher Lauren Nicholson took the loss to fall to 1-4 on the year.
