UMBC SOFTBALL DROPS SPRING CLASSIC OPENER TO BINGHAMTON, 9-1; WINS SECOND GAME OVER UMES, 10-0

    Baltimore, Md.After Day One of the 2004 UMBC Softball Spring Classic, Binghamton (4-2) leads in the standings, as the Bearcats won both of their games today with a 3-2 decision over Fordham (6-7) and a 9-1 victory over host UMBC (5-10). Fordham, UMBC, and St. Francis (PA) (1-1) are tied with 1-1 tournament records, while UMES (1-5) trails as they fell to the Red Flash in the opener, 8-4, and to UMBC in the final game, 10-0.

     

    In the Retrievers’ game against Binghamton, the Bearcats got on the board early after scoring two runs in the first inning. UMBC was able to cut the lead in half in the bottom stanza when they capitalized on an error by Binghamton second-baseman Nicole Vitello. However, the Bearcats would add runs in each of the final four innings, while the Retrievers would not be able to score anymore as Binghamton starting pitcher Michelle Weeks gave up only one hit through seven innings of work.

     

    In UMBC’s second game, the Retriever bats came alive as they scored ten runs on ten hits in five innings off UMES pitchers Christina Mason and Lesley Aitkenhead. For the game, UMBC was led by senior Crystal Beveridge, who went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and four RBI’s. Retriever starting pitcher Amy Sadowl (1-4) earned her first win of the season, as she threw a three-hit shutout, while striking out five.
