SOFTBALL OPENS SEASON WITH SECOND-PLACE TROPHY AT SEAHAWK CLASSIC

2/24/2004

The UMBC softball team opened the 2004 season this past weekend by claiming the second place trophy in the Teal Bracket of the UNC-Wilmington Seahawk Classic with a 3-3 record. Retriever tri-captain Sarah Crowell earned All-Tournament honors as she went 9-for-19 on the weekend with five runs and four RBI’s.

On Friday, UMBC defeated Wright State, 4-3, before falling to Delaware State later in the day by a 3-1 count.

On Saturday, pitcher Kelly Claar got her first collegiate win, spinning a three-hitter and taking a shutout into the sixth inning as the Retrievers claimed a 3-1 victory over Winthrop. However, UNC-Greensboro outlasted UMBC in the later game, 8-7. Despite battling back from an 8-2 deficit, the Retrievers left the tying run at second base in both the sixth and seventh innings to take the heartbreaking loss. Freshman pitcher Jessica Taylor struck out three and allowed no hits in relief, while the Retriever offense banged out seven doubles.

On Sunday, UMBC scored nine runs on nine hits to advance to the Teal Bracket championship game with a 9-6 victory over Winthrop. In the finals, UMBC held a 5-3 lead up to the fifth inning, but Wright State scored a run in the bottom of the fifth and seventh to send the game into extra innings. The Retrievers loaded the bases in the top of the eight, but were unable to score, and they saw Wright State come up with the victory with one out in the bottom stanza for a final score of 6-5.

UMBC returns to action this weekend as they participate in the Dixie Classic at Virginia Beach, Va.
