Former UMBC standout Julia Culotta joined the Retriever staff as an assistant coach in June 2011. She will be the top assistant on head coach Joe French's staff and is responsible for recruiting and scouting, in addition to ground and field maintenance. Culotta will also teach a physical education class.
“I am excited to have Julia join the staff,” head coach Joe French said. “She is one of the hardest-working players I have ever coached, and I expect she will be the same as a coach. When you think about role model student-athletes, Julia heads the list.”
Culotta is fresh off a senior season in which she was named to the America East All-Conference second team after batting a team-best .384 with nine home runs, 33 RBIs and 37 runs scored – all career highs. She ranked in the top five in the America East in average, slugging percentage (.645), on-base percentage (.506), total bases (89) and walks (32). In addition, she belted nine doubles and was 10-for-12 in stolen base attempts.
A career .274 hitter, Culotta is tied for seventh all-time at UMBC with 21 home runs in her four years, and she ranks third with 84 walks. She amassed 155 hits, 96 RBIs, 25 doubles and 93 runs in 207 career games, and she is one of 14 Retrievers ever to play in 200 contests.
Culotta served as a team captain in 2011, when she was named team co-MVP, and she was recognized on the America East Honor Roll for earning a GPA of at least 3.0 during her competition season three times.
“I would like to thank Coach French and Dr. (Charles) Brown (athletic director) for allowing me this opportunity to coach at UMBC,” Culotta said. “It is with great pleasure that I accept this position and help us try to win an America East championship as soon as possible. I enjoyed my four years as a player very much, and now I want to embark on the next phase of my athletic career.”
Before coming to UMBC, Culotta was a reshirt freshman at the University of Tennessee in 2007 when the Volunteers were the national runner-up at the Women's College World Series.
A native of Street,
Culotta will work primarily with the position players and will also be involved in the areas of recruiting, scouting, fundraising, field maintenance and alumni relations.
