Larry Alvis is Coach French's right-hand man, as he assists the head coach in numerous areas including scouting and recruiting, offense and defense, as well as pitching.
Alvis, who returns for his second season at UMBC, brings a wealth of ASA experience to the Retriever program. A 20-year veteran coach of the Chesapeake Chargers, the area's 18 & Under ASA team, he has also previously served as the head coach at Anne Arundel Community College, where he led the team to a 20-9 record and a second-place finish in the NJCAA Division III Championships in 2001. Prior to this, he spent five years as the AACC head men's basketball coach, as well as four years as the assistant softball coach.
In addition, Alvis has coached numerous ASA teams to state, regional, and national tournaments, and several of his players have advanced to play college softball. "Larry made the transition from junior college to NCAA Division I very effectively," said French. "UMBC and its softball program will benefit from the experience and professionalism that Coach Alvis brings."
Alvis, a 1979 graduate of UMBC with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science, currently resides in Pasadena, MD with his wife, Sharon.
