Dave Witten returns for his second stint with UMBC. He spent three seasons as the Retrievers’ first base coach and outfield instructor from 2005-07, during which time UMBC compiled a 104-69 record, but he retired at the end of the 2007 season so that he could see more of his daughter Kristi’s softball games at Lake City Community College in Florida.
Witten, who will serve as a volunteer assistant coach, brings 15 years of coaching experience with him. While UMBC is his first collegiate coaching position, he served as the assistant coach at Century High School in Carroll County in 2003 and at Long Reach High School in Howard County in 2004. He also coached ASA travel ball from 1992 until he came to UMBC in 2005. Witten served in the Army from 1977-80, and he played and coached baseball for two years during his military service. He was primarily an outfielder and catcher.
“Dave has brought a wealth of ASA and high school experience to UMBC,” French said. “He knows the area well and has numerous local contacts, which have been great assets in recruiting in the Mid-Atlantic region and has also aided our clinics. He has helped make us a better ball club in his time here, and we’re glad he’s back.”
